The Final Four: Women Ahead Awards Shortlist

2017 Women Ahead Awards Finalist

Well, it’s certainly been an eventful start to the year as I’ve just received the fab news that I’ve made it onto the Women Ahead Awards Shortlist.  Whooop! Having been awarded The Content Marketing Academy Outstanding Achievement Award in January, I was more than a little surprised to get this call too!

I’m really am so so so pleased to have been shortlisted for this Award.

This is my very first submission for an award as a small business owner and more importantly, these awards are locally based. As they recognise women living or working in Dundee and Angus, despite the fact I grew up in the area, is literally been a few months of establishing myself and each business in the locality.

I feel very proud that the panel has understood the vision I have for Millie’s Lifestyle business overall. While I know our future is exciting, it’s a great confidence boost that a panel can also see that too!

Who are Women Ahead?

Women Ahead is affiliated to the Association of Scottish Businesswomen (ASB), the umbrella organisation representing over 1000 businesswomen in Scotland.

They look to encourage, support and connect women in business and the professions in Dundee and Angus. One of the ways they do this is through their Awards, held annually to celebrate the work of those nominated but also to help raise their profile too.

What is the Award for?

There are six categories with four individuals shortlisted for each Award.  I’ve personally been shortlisted for the Most Promising New Business Award.

This particular category is for businesses less than three years old and “who has the drive and ambition to determine its success and long-term viability”.

The application form grilled me on my vision for the business, my use of market research and three-year business plans. I also had to outline how I’d overcome challenges and minimised risks along with providing two references (thank you so much, Maggie and Pam, for your kind words!)

Next Steps

At the moment I’m not aware of who the other individuals are in my category are but I’m looking forward to hearing their stories and sharing their successes during the Awards night itself.

In the meantime, I’ve been invited to an interview on Monday 6th February which will help inform their final decision. Wish me luck!

It’s at this point, that I should, of course, say that regardless of who wins then I’ll still be very proud to have been recognised. But well, if I’m honest, of course I’d like to win. I believe in my business and I believe in the difference my plans over the next 1-3 years will make to our customers.

Whatever the outcome on the night, I know I’m going to be in the fab company as the wonderful Caroline McKenna (Social Good HQ), Cara MacKay (Gillies and Mackay), Pam Laird (Fin & Co) are also finalists in three of the other categories.  The Content Marketing Academy is well and truly represented along with a fellow Carnoustie business owner Bethany Bowles who owns Gather. Yep she’s my favourite supplier of gin ;0)

I suspect, regardless of the outcome, we’ll be enjoying a few glasses of Prosecco on the night and I’ll have my fingers crossed for them all too!
