Where to Find the Best Seaside Ice-Cream in Essex:
#1 Rossi Ice-Cream Parlour – Southend-on-Sea
Rossi has been producing award-winning ice cream in Essex since 1932 and no trip to Southend-on-Sea would be complete without stopping by here. Their ice-cream is based on a traditional Italian recipe of fresh milk, butter and double cream.
It really was no surprise that Rossi’s was at the top of our survey for the best ice-cream in Essex. Having worked nearby for a few years, I can personally vouch that you won’t regret a little trip down to try out an ice-cream (rum and raisin for me please!).
Be prepared for queues during a hot summers day but grab a takeaway cone and sit outside to enjoy those amazing beach views.
My favourite! Always visiting Rossi, it’s my favourite for ice cream and the food is good too! Lovely for a trip down the seafront – even if the suns not out! TripAdvisor Review, August 2017
You know you’re in Southend when you sit outside in the middle of winter eating Rossi’s 99 with a Flake! #rossiicecream @rossiicecreamsouthend #rossiicecreamsouthend #icecream #retroicecream #lifestyleblogger #lifestyle #lifestylephotographer #kerrygreenphotography #southendonsea #unlimitedengland #quintessential

#2 Poco Gelato – Leigh-on-Sea
Love the decor, the service and the ice-cream! I always want more flavours than I can fit in my tub 😀 The coffee’s great too! Siobhan Bartlett (Google Review, September 2017).
#3 Bateman’s Cafe – Brightlingsea
Open all year round, Bateman’s cafe is right on the beach so you really can’t fault those views.
Selling both whippy ice-cream, cones and slushes, this cafe is a popular drop-in point for those beach hut lovers too!
Best cup of tea for ages and the ice-creams were delicious .. so many flavours to choose from. Also purchased a bucket & spade for my little granddaughter, much to her delight. Look forward to returning. Deborah Galvin-Law (Facebook Review, September 2017)

While you’ll find their yummy ice-cream in several farm shops and restaurants, you can also buy direct via their ice-cream van based at Mistley Wall.

#5 The Chocolate Parlour – Frinton-on-Sea
I was so pleased that The Chocolate Parlour was mentioned several times in our survey responses. This was probably one of my first ice-creams at the seaside in Essex while out searching for our very first beach hut.
Just a stone’s throw away from the promenade, this cozy tea-room severs lunches, afternoon tea, coffee, handmade chocolate and fab ice-cream. Great service and super quick too even during their peak summer days.
Great range of flavours, with very friendly staff. Extremely good value for money and what better way to spend a few minutes on a summers afternoon with an ice cream. Graham P. (Trip Advisor Review, August 2016).
Full Address – 11 Connaught Avenue, Frinton-On-Sea. CO13 9PN
#6 Tip-Tree Tea Room – The Lock, Heybridge Basin
With stunning Blackwater Estuary views, the tea-room at Heybridge Basin is bright and airy. Offering both indoor and outdoor seating, it’s a stunning location to watch the world go by (and lots of sailing too).
While their ice-cream choice is limited, I suspect the tea-room has made it onto the list down to its stunning location and fantastic service. This former ship’s chandlers and café serve traditional café-style breakfasts, home-made lunches and ‘Tiptree’ cream teas. So why not grab a quick bite to eat, then a takeaway whippy ice-cream for a wander along the lock.
You could even hire a rowing boat or enjoy a one-hour boat cruise too.
Great food. Amazing views. Nice staff. Vegan catered for breakfast wise as far as I could see as you can mix and match bits. Dog friendly outside. Gets very busy but I can see why. Daniel Palmer (Trip Advisor Review, October 2017)
