If you’ve been following the news this week, you may have noticed that there is a big vote going on.
Yes, its’ true, the rumours are correct – Towergate has announced their Top 10 Beach Hut of the Year Finalists and voting is open! Ok, ok, I do jest a little. There has also been that little small matter of an EU Referendum and as I hit publish on my roundup of ‘Things to Do in Essex this Weekend’, many people will be voting at the polls before they close for the evening.
If you’ve been engaging in the debate this week, either at home or at work, I suspect you’ll be ready for some ‘time-out’. No matter which way the vote goes, I’m really looking forward to some down time this weekend and have my fingers crossed that the storms pass!
As always, I’ve found plenty of options for your family day out in Essex this weekend – it’s a busy one, with lots of two-day events taking place across the county.
Saturday 25 And Sunday 26 – See Programme for various timings.
Clacton Sea and Beach Festival, Clacton
This is the 2nd year of the festival which runs across the two days and I have my fingers crossed for better weather too! New for this year, is the National Watersports Championships including stand up paddle boarding, kitesurfing and windsurfing.
The final programme of events can be found on their facebook page and there is lots of beach based activities as well as music and entertainment. A great family day out (or two!).
Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 – 10am onwards
Colchester Food and Drink Festival Lower Castle Park, Colchester
For the 13th year, this two-day event returns to Castle Park in Colchester, Great for ‘foodies’ who enjoy spotting a celebrity chef and hanging out in the Chef Kitchen but also a family looking to discover some new food on the day.
You could create your own picnic on the day and make use of the ale or cocktail/prosecco bar or you could take home your find to enjoy at your leisure.
The Colchester Rose Show is also inside the festival with free of charge entry.
Friday 24 June to Sun 3 July – see programme for various times
Harwich Festival, Harwich
This weekend sees the start of Harwich Festival with a wide range of activities from music to public performances to tea dances. The weekend has a particular focus on live performances with the summer ball on Saturday evening. The full programme of events can be found on the website.

Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 – 9am to 5pm
Essex Vee Dubbers Volkswagen Weekend, Battlesbridge
Whilst prebooking has closed for the Essex Vee Club, this is a huge event with a number of categories for best in show and shine. Expect to spot a great range of vintage VW’s with some very proud owners.
Note there is a bike jumble on the second day.
Saturday 25 June – as per park opening times
Bee Trail Launch, Castle Park, Colchester
The first day of a new family activity to Castle Park. You have to try and find all the BEE hives using a map whilst also answering questions using information on the trail. If you hand in the completed trail sheet to one of the nominated drop-off points, you will be entered into a draw at the end of the summer.
Sunday 26 June – 10am start
Free 4 Kidz Day at Museum of Power, Langford, nr Maldon
Lots of opportunities to see a great range of engines at this family day out. From Scaletrix to the miniature steam train (chargeable), there is lots to see and do. The ‘Astaria’ model village will be open along with Boundy Castle and rides and games.

Tudor Midsummer at Kentwell Hall
Noted as being the biggest event of its type in the UK, you can expect up to 400 Tudors at weekends creating the dress, speech, food, drink, music, dance and lots more of the chosen year! You’ll definitely feel transported back to that period of time.
A really informative website telling you all about the day and if the weather fails, there are lots of indoor activities planned along with outdoor activities that will be moved indoors (one very well planned event!).
Saturday 25 June and Sunday 26 June – starts at 10am
Heybridge Basin Regatta, Maldon
With sailing races on Saturday and Sunday consisting of kids activities, the Heybridge Basin Regatta is a firm favourite of mine particularly the slippy pole and welly wanging competitions.
The BBQ will be lit at 10am on Saturday for bacon rolls with the main sailing taking place during Saturday afternoon. Sunday kicks off with a children’s scavenger hunt at 10.30 and ends with the infamous flour battle on the beach – great family fun (though showers and baths required!).
