Really? Half-Term is already here!!?!??! With many Essex attractions viewing half-term as the last opportunity to make the most of daylight saving time, there are lots of fab ideas for days out with the kids this half-term. While I’m personally loving homemade soup and those comforting Sunday lunches, that autumn light during sunset keeps me heading outdoors to enjoy it.

Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 October – 10 am to 4 pm
Apple Weekend – Thames Chase Forest Centre
A weekend event filled with childresn’s activities and a treasure hunt where you can also peruse a fab market. Yep, you guessed it right. There will be lots of apples! Local country crafts and woodcraft will also be on display.
Saturday 21 October – 11 am to 3 pm
Hedgehogs and Hibernation – Naze Visitor Centre
“Come on our hibernation trail and make a leaf hedgehog. There will also be talks and activities with Hedgehog Haven”.
Note there is a suggested donation of £3 per child.
Saturday 21 October to Tuesday 31 October – 10 am to 5 pm
Halloween Pumpkin Trail and Catapulting Witches – Mountfitchet Castle
“Join in with our fun Pumpkin Trail, follow the clues to find the Pumpkins, collect their names to claim your prize.
There will also be a great interactive event not to be missed where children can launch Witches and Ghosts from our famous medieval catapult at 12 pm and 2 pm every day. See how far you can fire the Witches!!”

Shriek Week – Colchester Zoo
“Experience plenty of spook-tacular themed displays and activities throughout the day! Creepy Creatures – RHS Garden Hyde Hall
“Discover all there is to know about creepy creatures this half term, with crafts, a garden trail and more. Pumpkin carving will also be available every day for £5 per pumpkin, though must be booked.
Crafts are available on a drop-in basis every day 10am-3pm for £2 per child.”

Dr Gore’s Spooky Mad Lab – Royal Gunpowder Mills

Pumpkin Patch Self Guide Trail – Belhus Woods Country Park
“Buy a self-guided trail pack for £3 from the Visitor Centre and then set off on a walk through the woods searching for pumpkin trail markers. Solve puzzles and work out clues as you fill in your Halloweeny trail booklet, ready to return to the Visitor Centre to collect a well done gift.
There is no need to book, just gather your family, friends and a sense of adventure.”

The Big Sleepover – Layer Marney Tower
“Not since Tudor times have people slept the night in the Long Gallery at Layer Marney Tower. But, now we are offering you the opportunity to do so. Pumpkin Plod – Haven House
“The grumpy Pumpkin King has taken control of the forest – can you help us cheer him up by completing this Halloween themed family fun walk on the outskirts of London? Starting and finishing at the hospice in Woodford Green, enjoy a 5k plod through the forest completing challenges to help create our witch’s potion that will make the Pumpkin King smile. With the alternative option of a 2k plod on our grounds, it really is the perfect half term event for the whole family.
The Haven House Pumpkin Plod theme is Pumpkins and Bats. If orange is your colour, go pumpkins all the way, or don your wings and embrace your inner Batman.”
