Meet Our Suppliers: ClimeMET

Ever looked at one of our beach hut interiors and wondered where or how we bought it?  Just this morning, I answered a question from another beach hut owner about a table tray in one of the new beach huts Sunnysands and often find myself sharing websites and links to the items in each beach hut.  While I love being able to refer this business on and save someone from googling, it’s the stories behind our suppliers that I love and its the reason why I started the ‘meet our suppliers’ blogs.  Maybe I have this picture of creative small businesses working away at home that just makes me a little bit more curious about their company and why they do what they do? Or perhaps I’m just nosy!

Either way, whenever a small business who has supplied a product for our beach huts says yes to featuring in a blog. I get a tad excited!!!

In the latest instalment of our ‘Meet Our Suppliers’ blog series, our fab friends at ClimeMET agreed to answer a few questions and let you in on what they do.  I won’t spoil it by waffling on any longer and instead, I’ll let you delve into their answers!

Oh do look out for a little discount form them on all weather dials at the end too!

Meet Our Suppliers:  ClimeMET

Tell us a little bit about your business. What inspired you to start it and how has ClimeMET developed?

ClimeMET is a small home and garden brand and we design our range of weather instruments from our workshop in rural Suffolk. Our hero products are weather dials, such as tide clocks, thermometers, barometers and moon phase clocks and we’re all about helping people make the most of the great outdoors. The company was created by our founder Nic. He had a passion for the beauty of the Great British countryside and wanted to help other people enjoy it as much as he did, and that’s something we’re still really passionate about.

You have such a wide range of products from tide clocks to weather stations and all with different designs.   How did you decide on colours and designs?

Our products are designed by our small team, usually around our big meeting room table, with lots of cups of tea! We recently introduced metallic colours in rose copper and golden bronze which are proving really popular. We try and choose colours that we think will work well in people’s homes and gardens. We tend to naturally choose quite subtle colours, and our traditional slate grey is still our best seller.

I’ve spotted some gorgeous photographs of your products in their new homes.  Do you have a favourite order and/or photo of them at ‘home’?

We love hearing from customers who have put our products up in their homes, and more and more we’re finding that people are coming back to add additional weather dials to their collections which is great to see. This is one of my all-time favourite reviews about one of our tide clocks: “A quality item finished well and looks wonderful in my conservatory opposite the beach. No need to guess if the tide is nearly in or nearly out.” I picture this beautiful little house by the beach with the sound of the waves in the distance.

What do you enjoy most about what you do?

I love designing new products. We’ve got a new product range launching very soon, and I’m so excited for it! It’s great to see months of planning come together and to get feedback from the very first customers to see the products. When we added the wall clock to our range we had a waiting list on a board up in our office of people who wanted to be the first to add the clock to their personal collections. It’s heart-warming to know that people look forward to seeing the products we’re designing.

I couldn’t help but spot you’ve recently joined Instagram and loved seeing Wilbur, your four-legged helper hanging out in the office.  What does a typical day look like for you – are you office based?

Yes, we’re on Instagram! We’ve participated in Joanne Hawker’s ‘March Meet The Maker’ Challenge which has been a great way to establish our social feed. Each day Joanne provides a prompt for your Instagram photos, all centred on giving customers a behind the scenes look at life at ClimeMET HQ.

I’m lucky to be able to take my dog Wilbur to our offices, and he’s great fun! A typical day involves lots of walks, progressing design projects for new products, planning social media posts, approving artwork for new packaging and catalogues, and packing customer orders somewhere in between! Luckily we’ve got a great team who are constantly on the go. Wilbur likes to help out but tends to be more of a hindrance as he loves popping bubble wrap when we’re trying to pack, and barking at the doorbell when we’re on the phone.

What do you like to do for fun?

I love being outside – walks on the beach with my dog Wilbur are my favourite. We’re close to Walton On The Naze, and the beautiful Suffolk coast is not too far either so we’re very lucky.

Running a small business can be tough at times – what’s been your biggest challenge so far?

A big challenge for us is balancing ‘new’ with ‘classic’ – this comes up often as many of our products are traditional weather watching instruments and we want to preserve the heritage of the original instrument, whilst still putting our own, modern twist on the design.

What would be your top three tips for starting a new business?

  1. Pick something that you love as you’ll be doing it 24 hours a day
  2. Pick something that you know and understand so that you can share your expertise and knowledge with your customers. It also makes it a lot easier to create social media content as it’s authentic.
  3. Surround yourself with likeminded people so that your goals can be achieved and celebrated together

The new range that we’re launching soon is definitely one of the most exciting product launches I’ve ever worked on. I’m so proud of what the team have designed, and really can’t wait for our fans to see it. There’s a sneak peek on our Instagram feed if you’re curious!
